Welcome to the Certificate in Clinical Ethics (CCE) Program from the Center for Practical Bioethics and The American Journal of Bioethics. Over the past 25 years, the Center has led the nation in training for ethics committees and clinical ethics consultation. More than just a group of faculty and researchers, the Center is registered with the Kansas Board of Regents to offer bioethics education. The American Journal of Bioethics, housed at the Center for Practical Bioethics, is the leading bioethics journal in the world, and its online site, bioethics.net, the most-visited website in bioethics.
Together, these innovative institutions, working with Apple, have created the most innovative Certificate in Clinical Ethics ever conceived. I am delighted to play a part in this iPad-based program, that allows mid-career professionals, post-baccalaureate students and others to complete training in bioethics using the single most comprehensive library of resources and the easiest, smartest distance learning interface ever put together.
In our Certificate program, a faculty of mentors will guide you as a student and follow you as an alumnus. Your clinical ethics certificate from the Center will prepare you to do new things, sharpen skills, and play leadership roles – whether in an ethics committee or in writing policy or in treating patients. Or perhaps you are just seeking lifelong learning in the fastest growing area of academic study. Either way, you will join peers from around the world in a program that has its roots in a unique collaboration hailed by everyone from Google to the Chronicle of Higher Education, and that includes, among other things, access to virtually every film, audio recording and publication in bioethics – and the right faculty to help you put the right information to use in the right way.
I’m Dr. Summer Johnson. As the Director of Graduate Studies, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Center for Practical Bioethics’ CCE Program. I look forward to talking with you about your goals and the many opportunities available to you. I made bioethics research and teaching my career and completed a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University. Today, more and more smart professionals, patients and students are turning to online training as part of their education in bioethics and major research institutions are beginning to offer their training in that more convenient way. If your interest and experience are a match for our program, I look forward to sending you your iPad and working with you and your mentor to unlock the possibilities of bioethics education in the 21st century.
